Education costs have been steadily increasing in Uganda, leaving many who need support behind.
Although my parents both had stable jobs and we worked hard on our small farm, they struggled to cover my school fees in full. I received help from several relatives, friends, and even strangers.
Without this external assistance, I would not have been able to complete my education or become a priest.
Unfortunately, my situation is not unique. During my seventeen years of seminary formation, I witnessed many of my colleagues leave the seminary solely due to financial reasons. Sixty-seven percent of all school dropouts in Uganda cite financial constraints as the primary reason for their departure.
We have countless orphans, refugees, and students from impoverished families who are unable to complete their education due to a lack of school fees.
The average tuition for a high school student is $200 per term, while the average cost for a university student is $350 per semester. Though these amounts may seem small, they are significant sums for a Ugandan family.
That is why they require assistance, without which they cannot attain an education.
